Mayhaws in June

How about a cup of strong coffee with a shot of Crown (or some turkey-tail tea)? Here's a big shout out to Tall Pine Productions and to Dale Crider at Anhinga Roost, who have offered their friendship and support down the line and to whom we Mayhaws are eternally grateful.

"There are wild Mayhaws growing down the road, yet the distribution map does not show Orange County with any. The fruit is getting bigger by the day. I take it as a sign."

-- Our staunch ally, Eric Hoeppner of Tall Pine Cattleprods

Guerilla Folk (and the Florida Soak Fest)

A big ole smooch and a thank you to all the fine folk who came out to the Florida Folk Fest despite unseasonable dampness! Y'all are troopers and saints and ladies and gentlemen of the road. We were especially proud to have the chance to play for y'all at our campsite Saturday after they'd closed down the Azalea Stage due to possible electrocution of the musicians from windblown rain and total wire saturation. We hope y'all had as much fun as we did. Have we started a tradition? Mayhoppers and Dunehaws?

And we were also very impressed with Jack Williams and his lovely wife Judy's umbrella dance during that crazy downpour/thunderstorm that accompanied Grant Peeples' set at the amphitheater. The sound-folks and stage crews were astounding in their dedication, squeegee-ing the stage throughout the performance to keep the equipment and musicians from frying (the ground had long since reached maximum saturation and was done, y'all, done!). When we asked them what they wanted to drink on Sunday, they just ordered some coca colas. Amazing.

Did anyone catch that great moment in "Sunshine State" where Grant sings "number one in lightnin' strkes, snake bites..." and there was a HUGE thunderclap, and the five stubborn folks dancing in the aisles in rain ponchos bolted for cover? That was bee-u-tee-ful!

All y'all just rock.

Lonely Places

Did you hear about the Old Woman who went to Lonely Places after Five Days on the Wagon because she wanted to Bite the Bitter, but as she was leaving she was distracted by a Little Brown Bird and fell on a Prickly Pear and ended up Drivin' on 9 to the ER, but on the way there That Old Train held her up at a crossing and she decided to walk on the Side of the Road (In the Shadows, of course) back to the Place Where Dreams Come True, although before she could get there the cops picked her up for possession of an hallucinogen called Sailing No More, and now she's not only facing Hard Times she may Ride the Pine for quite a while. I Don't Wanna Hear You Laugh? It's true!

Yes, I mean No, I mean Yes, the Republican Party has been dubbed "The Party of No," to which we scoff, "HA!" for they are but rank amateurs when compared to The Mayhaws and their downright, downbeat, just-plain down tunes. Speaking of down, you can buy a copy of Lonely Places online.

If Hazel Dickens recorded "Hard Hitting Songs for Hard Hit People," then this collection could well be considered the sequel. The three songwriters in The Mayhaws, Sharla June, David Leporati and Carrie Hamby, have gone to the dark side and come out with some of their hardest-hitting songs yet, while managing to shine the surfaces just enough that you can see a reflection of your better nature, and maybe even your doppleganger, behind you laughing his or her butt off.

Along with some other fine songwriters, including Tallahassee's own Kim Thomas, The Mayhaws serve up a heaping helping of longing, regret, humor and hope that will get you kicking out your chair and shaking it long through the coming dog-days. Local guest musicians (Danny Goddard, Mark Patton, Bobby Cutts) lent their talents to the album.

All fun aside, thanks to everyone who attended the Party of No Return: Lonely Places CD Release Party!!!!

Lonely Places

Soon! Don't miss the CD release party for our highly anticipated (we highly anticipate it) record Lonely Places, May 16 at Bird's Aphrodesiac Oyster Shack in Tallahassee. CDs will be $10 only that night, with a $5 cover. All the hooplah starts at 8 PM. And y'all, Bird's has got some fine vittles and beers and outdoor seating to boot.

A big THANKS to all the wonderful folks we've met at the recent festivals who come out and support live music. Without y'all, this music wouldn't be kept alive and flourishing. We've made lots of new friends at WillFest and GambleFest, and we hope to see all y'all at the Florida Folk Festival later this month!

We've started booking our 2009 Summer Tour

If you want us to play in your town—anywhere up through the Carolinas and up/down the eastern seaboard, as far north as Boston—send along venue suggestions. You could also go to your favorite music venue, get the music person or owner very drunk, talk us up, wait for said person to pass out, and play our music over and over while he/she sleeps. They will be powerless to resist us.

Feel free to email and let us know if there's a venue in your town that would fit us. We're all ears.
